According to his club Rapid Vienna, Austrian striker Guido Burgstaller suffered a broken skull in an attack in the heart of the nation’s capital.
According to Rapid, the 35-year-old’s “serious head injury” over the weekend is likely to keep him out of play for several months.
The former Cardiff City forward reportedly suffered a “brutal blow” from a “unknown man” and fell, breaking his skull.
After being inspected on the spot, the 35-year-old, who has had 26 caps for Austria, was brought to the hospital, where he will spend the next few days.
“Trust in the responsible authorities that the as-yet-unknown perpetrator will be brought to justice quickly,” Rapid stated in a statement.
In 2014, Burgstaller became Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s second acquisition for Cardiff after joining from Rapid.
Prior to joining the German team Nurnberg, he made just three appearances for the Bluebirds.
Before rejoining Rapid in 2022, Burgstaller also played for Schalke and St Pauli in Germany.
Following a 3-0 victory against city rivals Austria Vienna in 2023, he was one of three Austrian players fired by manager Ralf Rangnick when they were caught on camera chanting gay epithets.
